I've joined in Homemade by Jill's advent calendar sew-a-long, and I just finished my first set of 8 ornaments! These have been such fun to make in spite of the mess of felt scraps and thread and floss bits everywhere, all part of the charm right? :) My daughter has been my little craft partner in the mornings, drawing and cutting Christmas decorations for our windows. I think a little bragging is in order for her great little drawings. She's quite the little artist for a not quite five year old. There will be a post on that here soon. Part of what I love about felt and these ornaments is the opportunity for illustration and incorporating my fine art roots, drawing was my first love which translated into a fine arts degree with a concentration in graphic design. These kind of projects combine that background with my new found love of sewing, and I have a blast. I've designed all of these on my own as I go, rather than using templates. I've machine stitched in most of the details, since I kind of have an aversion to hand sewing. I guess I just really enjoy the process and neatness of the machine; the instant gratification is definitely a part of the appeal I'll admit. It's been fun seeing how each ornament fits on the tree and placing them in the little pockets. Now only 16 more to finish before December 1st!

These look fantastic! :) How do you get your lines so straight when machine stitching? Mine always come out looking so crooked that I can't use the machine for decorative stitches, hahah~
So cute! I especially love the hot cocoa. It looks so inviting!
Fabulous! I love the little mug of hot cocoa, with the teeny tiny mashmallows! Such great detail, I can't wait to see the rest!
Super Cute!
beautiful! love them! ps are we having another date this christmas :) ?
Miss Katie R.—Yes please, lets!!! Hopefully I won't be quite so tired and out of it this time...we'll see ;). Looking forward to seeing you!
Oh my gosh so cute! You are so talented! Love your blog by the way!
Amazing... the first word to come out of my mouth was WOW!!! Keep up the great work... can't wiat to see more.
I don't have time to make this, so I'm just gonna craft vicariously through yours. Simply amazing.
WOW... I love them!! And I love that you used you machine! I despise hand sewing lol
these ornaments are perfect!!! I have a similar advent calendar and wanted to make new set of ornaments, you just gave me a bust:-)
Anyway, I really admire the quality your work.
I can't get over how perfect your advent calendar is. PERFECT, I say.
Thank you to everyone for such kind words! It's so encouraging and certainly motivating to get this done on time. Got a little distracted this weekend but I'm gonna get back on it :).
ADORABLE!
PLEASE put a template of your ornaments!! they are perfect!!
I am amazed and in awe of your ornaments. They are spectacular! Thank you for sharing.
I LOVE that mug of hot chocolate!! I've already cut out all of my ornaments, but I'm thinking I may just take one of mine out and replace it with that!! Cute idea!
Great machine sewing, too! Sewing such tiny ornaments on my machine would be a challenge for me! Props to you, girl! :o)
These are absolutely exquisite. Would you consider a pattern template for the artistically-challenged amongst us?!
Polly and Squeaks-
Thanks so much for your compliments and interest in my ornaments. I'd love to create templates for people to use I just don't have the time to create them right now. I've just been making them up as I go and haven't made any templates really that I could just copy and post. With three kids four and under and being 8 months pregnant with my fourth I just can't commit to that now. I'd love to be able to do more of that in the future. We'll see :).
I am TRULY amazed! Do you mind sharing what kind of sewing machine you have? I am in the market for a new one and need one that can handle small detailed stuff like this...preferably with a speed control of some sort. Beautiful work lady!!!!
Kelly K.- Thanks so much! I have a Pfaff Select 1528. I love it! My mom bought it for me during a sale. It handles really well with detailed stitching and through several layers of the hefty stuff like denim and canvas. I would definitely recommend it. The speed control is all in the pedal, you can go as slow or fast as you want. And that baby can move! I've never sewn with the pedal to the floor. Hope that helps! Good luck finding your new machine!
Thanks for the info! I have a very inexpensive singer that was fine when I was learning, but the petal is SO touchy that if I try to press it down just a little to go slow, it always suddenly takes off a million miles an hour. This isn't good for little detailed things! I thought I needed a speed control slider of some sort, but maybe I just need a less touchy petal. I will definitely check this one out. Love seeing all your crafts...I am amazed you can do all that with 3, almost 4 kids! I have one and I am busy! :)
you really need to post a tutorial or templates!! these are amazing!!
Hi! I stumbled across your blog bc i LOVE felt ornaments..I was wondering how i can get a copy of the patterns? Thanks! =) Its so beautiful!
Anonymous-
Glad you stumbled by :). Unfortunately there are no patterns for these. I just drew them out as I went. And the freehand templates that I made for myself got all cut up in the creation process. Sorry I don't have any to share. Thank you so much for stopping by! Merry Christmas!
Are you still planning a PDF pattern?! I am checking your blog daily waiting for it! I know you are super duper busy but if you could give us all an update...I’d like to make something very similar to yours this year (2012) but if it won’t be available, I’ll have to start looking for a back up plan. :( So sad!
I know Im SUPER late coming into this conversation...but would you by any chance remember where you purchased your felt???
Lindsi- I purchased the colored felt at a nearby boutique called Fancy Tiger in Denver. The white backdrop I bought by the yard at JoAnn's.
These look very different from the ornaments I keep seeing around. You're very creative. Thanks for sharing.
